Understand the Significance of Updated IS 16046 Part 1

 

Batteries play a highly important role in everybody’s life. From using a remote to starting a car engine, it is the batteries that do all the work. Not many people realise this, but they all are surrounded by some sort of battery. As much as they are useful, they need to be handled well to avoid any hazards.

The Bureau of Indian Standards takes special care of battery production in India to eradicate any manufacturing defect on a battery. The BIS introduced IS 16046: 2015 where some standards were set which the battery manufacturers have to meet before their products can be used. This standard included secondary cells and batteries having alkaline and other non-acid electrolytes.

However, the standard-setting agency has scrapped the previous standard and came up with new standards. The same has been divided into two parts and one of them is IS 16046 Part 1. The new standard came into effect in 2020 and every manufacturer has to comply with the standards.

The first and the biggest change in these Indian standards is that the IS 16046 Part 1 includes only portable sealed secondary cells and nickel systems. It also includes button cell requirements.

When it comes to obtaining BIS certification for nickel system batteries, an existing manufacturer has two options. The first one is that they have to carry out additional testing as per the new standards and rules provided by the BIS. The other option is that that they can apply for a fresh BIS licence and follow the process from the scratch. However, the biggest change is that manufacturers have to get a fresh licence number from the BIS.

These were the clauses that are mentioned in the Indian Standard 16046 Part 1. These are implemented to make sure that the batteries are safe to use and have a safety feature for charging. It is mandatory for every manufacturer to comply with the standards and obtain the BIS certification.
