Scope of 5 Indian Standards mandatory for Wheel Rim BIS Certification

The Bureau of Indian Standards is responsible for monitoring and setting the quality standards for the products sold in India. Presently, there are over 130 products that require mandatory BIS certification before they can be sold or imported to India.

Studies have shown that inadequate quality of wheel rim one of the most significant reasons for road accidents. BIS has added a new product under their mandatory scheme which is the wheel rims. From 1st October 2020, every wheel rim sold in India will require BIS certification, or else BIS will take the necessary action against the manufacturer.

Wheel rims have been divided into two different categories: wheel rim category 2W, 3W, e-car and e-rickshaw, and wheel rim for other vehicles. BIS has added 5 Indian standards mandatory for wheel rim and those standards are mentioned below.

IS: 16192 (Part 1) - Automotive Vehicles Wheel Rims for Two and Three-Wheeled Vehicles Part 1 Light Alloy Wheel Rims Method of Tests and Requirements.

IS: 16192 (Part 2) - Automotive Vehicles Wheel Rims for Two and Three-Wheeled Vehicles Part 2 Sheet Metal Wheel Rims Method of Tests and Requirements

IS: 16192 (Part 3) - Automotive Vehicles Wheel Rims for Two and Three-Wheeled Vehicles Part 3 Spoke Wheel Rims Method of Tests and requirements

IS: 9436 - Performance Requirements and Methods of Tests for Wheels for Passenger Cars

IS: 9438 - Performance Requirements and Methods of Tests for Wheels or Rims for Trucks and Buses

With the implementation of these standards, the manufacturers will have to pay special attention to the quality of the rims manufactured or else they will be declined by BIS.

Reduced Road Accidents

Poor quality rims are a major contributor to road accidents in India. Not every Indian road is perfect, and they are a combination of smooth and potholes. For such roads, good quality rims are essential. With this move, BIS is directly reducing the number of accidents happening on Indian roads.

Preparation of Testing Facilities

Every new rule imposing takes a lot of effort and time. The same applies to mandating BIS certification for wheel rims. The testing infrastructure is limited, and applicants are many due to which testing can take a lot of time. Making a slight mistake can result in a delay in obtaining BIS certification. To avoid any such delay, BIS consultants in Delhi can help with their expertise.

Even though the infrastructure is limited, BIS is continually upgrading the facilities ensuring that the certification process becomes smooth and fast for all the seekers.
