Is Government Planning on Introducing New Rule on Quality of Refrigerators?

India is a developing country where changes in rules and regulations is a major part of it. In recent times, India has witnessed a drastic change in technology; be it domestic or international. However, the government of India ensures that they keep a check on the quality of the products sold in the country to ensure that the citizens are safe and attain high-quality products. There is a governing body created by the government known as the Bureau of Indian Standards that monitor and keep a check on the quality of the products produced and imported in India.

Refrigerators are among the most widely used products with each household and commercial space having at least one of them. Though many of the products require mandatory BIScertification, refrigerators are not among them. With that thing in mind, the government has plans to bring these appliances under their monitoring eye as they are working on a new draft on the same.

Under this new draft, when passed, the government will check on imports as well as domestic production of refrigerators and freezers. Before its implementation, the government is presently discussing the draft with the members of the World Trade Organisation and domestic industry. But, why is there a need to bring refrigerators under the mandatory BIS registration scheme?

Higher Quality, Better Consistency

Though most of the refrigerators produced in India are of high quality, there was no monitoring of their quality. With the implementation of this draft, the BIS will keep a check on a manufacturing unit and perform a test on the production process to ensure that the final products are made of high quality and are reliable to use. Some of the sellers may import low-quality products as they are a bit cheaper. Once this rule is applied, then all such manufacturers have to go through these tests every time and will reduce low-quality imports as well.

Safeguarding the Environment

Refrigerators may produce harmful halocarbons which are the direct contributors to ozone depletion. As the technology is advancing, refrigerators come with efficient tech which causes minimal damage to the environment. Another motive of the introduction of this draft is to ensure that every new refrigerator manufactured or imported is safe for the environment.

Though there is no official date of implementation of this rule, but it is believed that it could go in action from 1st July 2021. All the manufacturers and importers of refrigerators have to attain mandatory BIS registration for their products. BIS consultants in Delhi can provide the right assistance required for the process and will help all those people who are not aware of the rule.
