Understand the New Implementation of Standards on LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE

On April 15, 2021, the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals working under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers published an order where it was made mandatory for specific polymers to obtain BIS certification. The order is named Specification of Polyethylene Material for Moulding and Extrusion with an IS number of IS 7328: 2020.

Under this order, every petrochemical producer of LDPE, LLDPE, and HDPE has to meet the set standards by the Bureau of Indian Standards and attain a certification mark before selling their products in India.

Low-Density Polyethylene or LDPE is the one used the most commonly in packing materials and grocery bags whereas LLDPE or linear low-density polyethylene is a bit sturdy and used in toys, pipes and other similar items. The last one added in this order is HDPE or high-density polyethylene which is the strongest of them all and is used in mugs, bottles, and jugs.

All such polyethylene producers have to go for BIS registration if they intend to sell their products in India. The same applies to imports done in India. However, any such product made for exports is exempted from this order. This latest order by the government has given a deadline of October 12, 2021.

When it comes to these three types of polyethylene, then India is majorly dependent on imports rather than domestic manufacturing. One of the biggest motives of introducing this order is to boost up the quality of domestically made items and reduce the dependency on foreign manufacturers.

Without a doubt, the government has given ample time to complete the registration process so that domestic manufacturers can meet the set standards. BIS also takes all the needed steps to ensure that all the manufacturers are complying with the standards so that the quality of the product is never compromised.

Even if any manufacturer is facing an issue in the process, all they have to do is reach out to a reliable BIS consultant. They are professionals who help anyone seeking assistance regarding the BIS certification process and provide consultancy services regarding the same. Whether is a domestic manufacturer or a foreign manufacturer, as per the government’s order, anyone planning to reach the Indian market with LDPE, LLDPE or HDPE, they have to follow the protocol and get the BIS certification before 12th October 2021.
